Corruption in China

Corruption in Transitional China is an invaluable and informative volume for anyone interested in corruption issues and anti-corruption policies not only in China but applicable elsewhere. This is the first-ever work offering comprehensive quantitative and qualitative analyses of the manifestation and determinants of corruption throughout China between 1979 and 2012. Among other observations, the evolutionary process in the nature and forms of corruption are closely related to changes in Chinese government economic and fiscal policies. It is so comprehensive it could be used as a reference work while parts of it read like a novel as the author illustrates types of corruption with typical cases. This research is descriptive and exploratory. With no centralized national data statistics, this work is based on five years of personal painstaking research by the author to gather 33 years' data covering all 31 Provinces of China from Procuratorate Year Books and Working Reports and other official announcements and proclamations by the central government agencies. The author clearly identifies three stages of social, economic, and political evolution as well as three stages of corruption, each with identifiable patterns with different dominant corruption types and law enforcement anti-corruption effects. Earning her PhD in Public Policy from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, Dr. Meng offers a concrete foundation for further anti-corruption theoretical analyses that are applicable to other countries facing similar problems by setting forth a series of specific anti-corruption policy recommendations.
